Balancing Hobbies

September 9th, 2024

The abrupt creation and development of this blog is proof that healthily balancing my hobbies is... unnatural. I've always had a binge-like personality, which can be fun and intense - and even useful sometimes when I'm obsessed with an actually constructive hobby - but my other passions always live in the back of my mind, and their solitude weighs on my conscience, making it difficult to fully enjoy anything.

I've binged gaming (Black Ops II, Diablo III, Hades...), watching anime (can you believe that I'm caught up with One Piece and that I've watched Hunter x Hunter twice?), reading novels (I've read ALL of Nisioisin's Monogatari Series), learning languages, and learning an instrument (I played in concert bands and jazz bands, and traveled to 3 different US states to compete).

I recently traveled to go see my best friend who's moved away. We spent a lot of time together, talked a bunch, and I started missing my high school days, when he, my friends and I were giving it our all in jazz band, together. I really felt like I belonged.

My best friend told me I should come back to music. Practice for a bit, then join a band. I think he's right! But there are too many things I want to do. If we ignore for one second that I'm, above all, looking for a solid, stable job, I also have many hobbies that I want to take on or continue. For example, there's making this website (which includes learning HTML, CSS and Javascript), and writing the novel that I've been meaning to write for years.

I'm also afraid to chase a high: the unattainable high of high school bliss and carelessness. But that shouldn't matter too much. The question is, what can I do except focus on what makes me feel happy?

Well, then comes the idea of balancing my hobbies. Maybe that'll make me happier. And this might sound counterintuitive, but I believe that'll become easier once I have a real job and my own cozy place. I need structure! Probably.

What do YOU do to balance out your hobbies? Please let me know :)

Thanks for reading! Truly!
